The initiative will bring together a multidisciplinary team of researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to explore innovative methods for producing, storing, and distributing hydrogen from renewable resources. The hub will also collaborate with international institutions to ensure that Africa remains at the forefront of green energy innovation.

“This research hub aligns with UM6P’s mission to lead Africa’s transformation toward sustainability and innovation,” said Dr. Nadia El Khalf, Director of Energy Research at UM6P. “By harnessing green hydrogen, we aim to unlock new opportunities for energy security, industrial development, and environmental protection.”
The project includes partnerships with leading global organizations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the OCP Group. Initial research will focus on pilot projects designed to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen-powered transportation and industrial applications within Morocco.
Green hydrogen has been recognized as a critical component of the global energy transition due to its potential to decarbonize sectors that are otherwise difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry and freight transport. The UM6P hub will emphasize scalable solutions tailored to Africa’s unique resource potential, including solar and wind energy integration.
In addition to its research agenda, the hub will offer academic programs and training to foster a new generation of experts in hydrogen technology. These efforts are expected to support Morocco’s commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and positioning the nation as a leader in sustainable innovation.
The launch event was attended by key figures from academia, government, and industry, who expressed strong support for the initiative's potential impact on Africa's energy future.
Training and Innovation for Future Leaders
The Green Hydrogen Research Hub is not only focused on technological development but also on cultivating future leaders in sustainable energy. Through specialized training programs, research grants, and internships, UM6P aims to equip students and early-career researchers with the expertise needed to drive Africa’s green energy transition.
Collaborations with international academic institutions will provide participants with access to cutting-edge resources and global networks, reinforcing UM6P’s role as a catalyst for innovation and leadership in the energy sector.
